Lawrence University recently announced the launch of Level Up, a bold new project to support student health, wellness, and performance. The Level Up project features the construction of two new facilities: The Loop, an indoor training center, and The Hub, a fitness, recreation, and practice facility.  

At the Level Up Kickoff Celebration on May 14, 2026, Lawrence revealed that work on phase one, The Hub, will begin immediately. The Hub is a major renovation project that will transform the lower level of the City Center East building in downtown Appleton into a fitness and recreation center serving the entire campus community, complete with practice facilities for athletics, and the music Conservatory.  

“The Hub will be a vibrant shared space that will foster connections by creating opportunities for students to engage with people and experiences they might not otherwise encounter,” said Chris Clarke, Vice President for Student Life.  

The 56,000 square-foot space for The Hub was gifted to Lawrence by local business leaders. It will serve a variety of campus needs, including:  

• Fitness & Recreation. 9,000 square-foot strength training and cardio center and three virtual reality experience bays 

• Vikings Athletics: Dedicated fencing team training room; batting cages with biometric feedback to adjust swing mechanics; hockey practice area with synthetic ice 

• Music Conservatory: State-of-the-art music rehearsal modules that can simulate a variety of acoustic environments, with record/playback features that allow musicians to hear their performance objectively and adjust in real-time 

“The Hub intentionally brings together wellness, athletics, and music, creating an environment that mirrors the way Lawrence students live, learn, and grow,” said Lawrence University President Laurie A. Carter. “This kind of creative, integrative thinking is exactly what today’s world – and job market – demands. The Hub reflects the adaptability, collaboration, and innovation our graduates will need to thrive and to lead in their lives after Lawrence.”
