Law for Learners Offers Free Legal Advice for Students in this WAICU Webinar
To help remove legal barriers that may prevent students from reaching their academic goals, WAICU will introduce Law for Learners (L4L) in a webinar on Tuesday, August 12, at 10 a.m.
Organized in 2019, L4L provides free legal services to students across Wisconsin. This initiative is part of Ascendium’s philanthropic mission and is currently in partnership with the Universities of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Technical College System. In this webinar Katie Chu from Ascendium will provide an overview of the L4L program and answer questions from WAICU member attendees.
There is no cost to WAICU member institutions to participate in this informational meeting, or in the L4L program.
Many of your students may already be accessing L4L services through connections with peers at other campuses. This presentation will provide an opportunity to learn how your institution can formally participate and help ensure your students have access to the legal support they need.
About Law for Learners:
L4L acts as a broker for legal service providers, connecting students with the right legal expert based on their needs. Here’s how it works if your institution decides to participate:
- L4L signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with each interested institution.
- L4L works with campus personnel (e.g., deans of students, advisors) to train staff on identifying legal issues—70 percent of student intakes come from staff referrals.
- Students or staff complete a simple intake form.
- L4L contacts the student, gathers details, and matches them with a legal expert.
- The student receives a 30-minute consultation within five days, along with recommended next steps.
