WAICU Participates in Joint Comments to DHS/ICE on Duration of Status for Visa Holders

In August, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (DHS/ICE) proposed a rule to eliminate duration of status for F1 visa holders and accepted public comments until September 29. The proposed rule would establish a fixed timeframe for student visas (F and J) and create a new “Extension of Status” process, as well as new limitations on the ability of international students to transfer or change majors.

WAICU coordinated with our national partners, American Council on Education (ACE), and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), to sign a joint letter with comments. The joint comment letter is attached here. These comments outlined a general framework for DHS/ICE to consider as it develops policy recommendations. NAFSA has provided additional information on the Duration of Status here.
