Carroll University DPT Students Deliver Critical Care in Ecuador Through Service Trips

A Carroll University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy student discusses patient’s options at outdoor clinic.
Carroll University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program continued its legacy of global service in 2025, sending two faculty members and nine students to Ecuador for a week of intensive, hands-on clinical care.
The trip marked Carroll’s second consecutive year serving in Ecuador following a COVID-related pause, building on a history of international service dating back to 2008 in Guatemala and Peru. With strong institutional support and student interest, the DPT program plans to continue global outreach experiences whenever possible.
Working in local clinics, the Carroll team conducted physical therapy evaluations and interventions, distributed equipment, such as walkers and canes, and made referrals for urgent medical needs. Without access to medical records, imaging or consistent supplies, students relied on clinical reasoning and adaptability, often delivering care in a single visit.
“For many patients, we were the first medical professionals they had seen in a long time,” said student Mia Allen. “We had to think critically and recognize when something required a higher level of care.”
Language barriers and cultural differences added complexity, with local university students serving as interpreters. Despite the challenges, patients expressed gratitude through hugs, gifts, and heartfelt thanks. Local leaders, including the mayor, visited daily to acknowledge the team’s impact.
“This experience helped me become a more confident, compassionate clinician,” Allen said. “Knowing we helped people live with less pain, that’s what matters most.”
