Carroll University Launches Behavioral Health Responder Certification to Strengthen Crisis Response Across Sectors

Carroll University introduces its new Behavioral Health Responder Certification, preparing professionals across higher education, health care, and public safety to collaborate more effectively in responding to behavioral health crises and strengthening community-wide crisis response.
As workplaces, schools, and public-facing professions increasingly encounter behavioral health crises, Carroll University has launched a new certification program aimed at preparing nonclinical professionals to respond effectively in those moments.
The university’s Behavioral Health Responder (BHR) Certification is designed for individuals whose primary roles are not in behavioral health, but who are often the first to recognize distress. The program focuses on helping participants identify warning signs, de-escalate tense situations, and connect individuals to appropriate resources. No prior behavioral health training is required.
The BHR Certification is designed for both individuals and organizations. Training multiple team members helps organizations expand internal capacity and reduce reliance on a single responder. Benefits of completing this certification include enhanced crisis response skills, reduced risk and liability, mitigation of burnout, and a stronger, more prepared workforce.
“The Behavioral Health Responder Certification addresses a growing need across workplaces and communities,” said Dr. Jessica Lahner, director of the BHR program. “By providing practical, accessible training, this program empowers professionals to respond effectively in moments that matter while strengthening organizational capacity and resilience.”
The certification follows a structured hybrid model that balances academic rigor with flexibility for working professionals. Participants complete 105 hours of training through a combination of self-paced online coursework and in-person sessions. Carroll University is offering multiple schedule options, including an eight-week session that began March 13. Two additional options are available: a three-week session from May 14 to June 12 and an intensive one-week session from August 10 to 14.
Online coursework is completed prior to the in-person component, which emphasizes facilitated discussion, case-based learning, and hands-on skills practice. While the curriculum remains consistent, in-person scheduling and logistics can be customized to meet organizational needs.
The program costs $2,500 per participant, with discounts available for organizational and group enrollment.
