This week, the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU) proudly begins celebrating its 65th anniversary, marking more than six decades of collaboration, advocacy, and shared commitment to expanding educational opportunity across Wisconsin.

WAICU’s story began on April 29, 1961, when presidents of Wisconsin’s private, nonprofit colleges gathered with a bold idea: work together as a sector to strengthen independent higher education. From those early conversations, led by leaders like Beloit College President Dr. Miller Upton and Carroll College President Dr. Robert Steele, WAICU was formed to amplify the collective voice of Wisconsin’s private institutions, while honoring each campus’s unique mission and identity.

In its earliest years, WAICU focused on three foundational priorities that remain central today: research, communications, and government relations. These efforts soon evolved into formal advocacy and staffing, including the hiring of WAICU’s first executive director and the establishment of a permanent Madison office. One landmark accomplishment followed in 1965, when WAICU’s advocacy helped secure passage of the Wisconsin Tuition Grant, now the Wisconsin Grant Program, opening doors to higher education for generations of students.

As the needs of students and institutions changed, WAICU evolved. The association launched student access programs in the late 1970s, expanded outreach to counselors and families, and in 2002, introduced the WAICU Collaboration Project—a nationally recognized model helping member institutions control costs while preserving independence. This collaborative spirit earned recognition from the U.S. Congress for its “transformative” impact.

A key milestone in WAICU’s modern history came in 2011, with the merger of the Wisconsin Foundation for Independent Colleges, further strengthening philanthropic support for students and campuses statewide.

Today, WAICU represents Wisconsin’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities as they work together for access, affordability, accountability, and student success. As we celebrate 65 years, we also look ahead, energized by our shared history and committed to shaping a strong future for Wisconsin students and communities.
