Expanding Access: 65 Years of Opening Doors for Wisconsin Students

At the heart of our student access work is a shared commitment to affordability and student success.
For 65 years, Wisconsin’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities have worked together through WAICU to expand access to higher education, ensuring that students across the state can pursue their goals, strengthen their communities, and contribute to Wisconsin’s future.
At the center of this work is a shared commitment to affordability and student success. Through sustained advocacy for the Wisconsin Grant Program, WAICU and its twenty-member campuses have helped make a private college education possible for generations of Wisconsin students. The impact is tangible. From 2014 to 2024 alone, 93,254 Wisconsin Grants were awarded to low- and low-middle-income students attending private, nonprofit institutions, transforming lives and expanding opportunity across the state.
WAICU and its member campuses are also expanding access earlier in the pipeline. More than 140 Wisconsin public school districts and private high schools partner with WAICU institutions to offer early college credit programs, concurrent enrollment opportunities, and college readiness initiatives. These programs allow students to experience college-level coursework, build confidence, and accelerate their academic journeys, often reducing both time to degree and total cost.
Together, these efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to access. It is not only about making college affordable, but also about ensuring students are supported every step of the way, from awareness and preparation to enrollment and graduation.
Today, that commitment contributes to a broader statewide impact. Wisconsin’s private colleges enroll tens of thousands of students each year and award more than 12,000 degrees annually, helping to build a skilled and adaptable workforce. Many graduates remain in Wisconsin, strengthening communities, industries, and the state’s long-term economic vitality.
As WAICU marks its 65th anniversary, the focus remains clear. The same collaborative spirit that has advanced student aid and college access for decades continues to guide its work today, removing barriers, strengthening pathways, and creating opportunities for every student.
