MSOE Launches $125 Million Comprehensive Campaign

Construction of the Robert D. Kern Engineering Innovation Center at MSOE is underway with plans to open in fall 2027.
Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) is taking its next step to become a leader in applied artificial intelligence education with the Next Bold Step: The Campaign to Accelerate Innovation. The $125 million comprehensive campaign launched in March 2025 and supports initiatives across campus.
“This campaign is more than just a fundraising effort. It is a transformational commitment to expanding opportunities for our students, enhancing our academic programs, advancing cutting-edge research, and strengthening our impact on our many external partners,” said Dr. John Walz, MSOE president.
At the heart of the campaign is the construction of the $76.5 million, 97,000-square-foot Robert D. Kern Engineering Innovation Center. This state-of-the-art facility includes interdisciplinary classrooms, laboratories, studios, and other collaboration spaces that promote hands-on experiences. MSOE hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Robert D. Kern Engineering Innovation Center in July 2025. Construction is underway and the building is expected to open in fall 2027.
“MSOE engineering students need a space that encourages collaboration, supports hands-on learning, and reflects the innovation happening here every day,” said Ruth Dobberpuhl, MSOE mechanical engineering student. “The Robert D. Kern Engineering Innovation Center turns these needs into reality. It will create an environment where students can connect, explore, and solve problems together.”
The campaign also supports strategic priorities including establishing and endowing the Dwight and Dian Diercks School of Advanced Computing, which will be a key driver in weaving AI and machine learning into all degree programs. Additionally, the launch of the Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence Education will guide initiatives, attract top faculty, and support area businesses.
Additional campaign funding will support conferences, research, scholarships, experiential learning activities, and enrich campus life.
