Wisconsin’s Private Colleges: Powerful Economic Engines in Our Communities
When people think about economic drivers in Wisconsin, manufacturing, health care, or agriculture often come to mind. But another force is quietly strengthening communities across the state: Wisconsin’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities.
Wisconsin’s Private Colleges are rooted in communities across the state and operate in four of Wisconsin’s economic regions, delivering substantial local and regional benefits. Together, these four regions account for more than $5.1 billion in total economic impact, illustrating just how deeply private colleges are woven into Wisconsin’s economic fabric.
In Southeast Wisconsin, home to the largest concentration of private colleges, these institutions generate an estimated $3.86 billion in total economic impact and support tens of thousands of jobs.
Faculty, staff, and students don’t just teach and learn. They live in local neighborhoods, shop at local businesses, dine in local restaurants, and host visitors who stay in area hotels. Those everyday activities keep money circulating in the region and strengthen the broader economy.
In East Central Wisconsin, private colleges generate approximately $662.9 million in economic impact. These campuses serve as anchors in their communities, supporting local employers and helping retain skilled workers who might otherwise leave the region. The presence of private colleges adds stability and opportunity, particularly in smaller communities that rely on consistent employment and spending.
South Central Wisconsin, including the Madison area, sees an estimated $517.3 million in total economic impact from private colleges. Beyond day‑to‑day spending and jobs, these institutions help fuel the region’s long‑term growth by educating graduates who strengthen Wisconsin’s workforce and contribute to innovation across sectors.
Even in West Central Wisconsin, where fewer campuses are located, private colleges generate a meaningful $141.6 million in economic impact. Through operations, purchasing, alumni employment, and visitor spending, combined with ripple effects across supply chains, private colleges support jobs and business activity well beyond campus boundaries.
Private colleges are sometimes overlooked as economic engines, yet they function much like major industries. They employ thousands, purchase goods and services, attract visitors, and most importantly, invest in people. By developing talent and expanding opportunity, Wisconsin’s Private Colleges help communities thrive today while building a stronger economic future for the state.
