2026 WAICU Nonprofit Internship Program
Are you looking for an enriching summer internship experience? Do you want to enhance your résumé with hands-on work experience? Do you have a passion for making a meaningful contribution?
Through the generous support of two benevolent foundations, WAICU can offer sixteen summer internships. Spend your summer working for a great nonprofit organization. Student interns receive a $4,000 summer stipend and a $6,000 scholarship in exchange for 400 hours of work over 10 summer weeks. Interns gain valuable experience in the nonprofit sector and get a summer of amazing experiences, as well as attend the WAICU Internship Institute, which will be held in-person in the spring. Internships are located throughout Wisconsin and offer a wide range of opportunities for many different majors.
Interns are selected by the nonprofit organizations to which they apply.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for the WAICU Nonprofit Internship Program, an applicant must:
1. Be currently enrolled full-time at a WAICU-member college or university
2. Possess and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better
3. Achieve/maintain full-time status as an undergraduate during the following academic year (NOTE: Students graduating BEFORE the Fall 2026 term ARE NOT eligible for the program).
4. Complete the WAICU Internship Agreement Form and W-9 Form and commit to 400 hours of service over 10 summer weeks
5. Demonstrate an interest in civic engagement in the nonprofit sector in one or more of the following areas: administration, program management, education, community outreach, finance, fund development, marketing and public relations, communications, human resources, technology, and other related areas (students from all academic areas are encouraged to apply).

Students may apply for more than one internship position but must submit a separate cover letter and resume for each position.
Applications must be received by March 20, 2026. However, internship sites may select candidates prior to this deadline, so it is in your best interest to apply as early as possible.

Summer 2026 Internships:
Jefferson County Literacy Council (Jefferson)
The Jefferson County Literacy Council (JCLC) is a nonprofit organization providing adult education in basic skills, English as a Second Language, GED preparation, digital literacy, health literacy, and citizenship. The intern will play an integral role in supporting nonprofit operations with a strong emphasis on organizing, marketing, and fundraising initiatives tied to JCLC’s 30th Anniversary Celebration. Responsibilities include project coordination, data management (Word, Excel, and databases), development of marketing and outreach materials (social media, website updates, Canva, press releases, and print collateral), and assistance with donor engagement and special event planning. The intern will collaborate closely with the Executive Director and program staff, interact with volunteers and adult learners, and gain hands-on experience in nonprofit management. A few Saturdays may be required, and some independent or remote work may be permitted to complete required hours. Preferred areas of study include marketing, communications, nonprofit management, education, or related fields. Spanish language skills are helpful but not required.
Note: Jefferson, WI is located 50 miles west of Milwaukee and 35 miles east of Madison. Interested candidates should live within commutable distance of Jefferson. Summer housing opportunities are limited though past interns have utilized Airbnb rentals.
Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum (Two Rivers)
Position Summary: The Education Intern supports the development, delivery, and evaluation of educational programs at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. This internship provides hands-on experience in museum education, interpretive programming, and visitor engagement within a working print museum. The intern will work closely with the Executive Director to support workshops, tours, and outreach programs that connect audiences to printing history, design, and craft.
Learning Objectives

Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning, preparation, and facilitation of educational programs, including school tours, public workshops, private group visits, and community programs
Support hands-on printing activities, including setting type, operating presses under supervision, and preparing materials - Help develop lesson plans, activity guides, and interpretive materials aligned with educational standards where appropriate
- Assist with program evaluation and visitor feedback collection
- Support outreach and engagement initiatives, including special events and off-site programming as needed
Assist with organization and inventory of education supplies and studio materials - Provide general support including administrative and logistical tasks.
Manitowoc Public Library (Manitowoc)
Manitowoc Public Library is looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Summer Intern. This position will work primarily in our Youth Services Department assisting with our Summer Reading Program, helping promote the program, registering patrons of all ages through our digital platform, and assisting patrons who use paper trackers. The interns will be expected to explain the program to patrons, hand out prizes, and assist in keeping track of participation. The intern will also assist librarians in organizing, prepping, creating, running, and monitoring children’s programming throughout the summer. This will range from creating scavenger hunts and passive activities to assisting with story times, crowd control during large programs, to running hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities. It’s essential for this intern to be a creative and outgoing self-starter, one who loves working with people (especially children and teens!), is punctual, can work independently and is comfortable working with technology.
Manitowoc County Historical Society (Manitowoc)
The Summer Museum intern will obtain practical museum experience and is expected to develop and carry out projects or programs that help them personally and professionally. The intern will be responsible for general museum operations and summer educational programs. Specifically, this intern will assist with planning, marketing, and development of the museum’s youth summer programs, memory care series, public programs, and workshops. The intern will also assist in expanding historic skills workshops and interpretation. The intern will meet with museum staff to create a personally meaningful project. This project can relate to their major or a personal goal and will be carried out throughout the summer (examples: create a historic heirlooms garden, create youth explore sacks). The project will be planned, marketed, and coordinated to be a part of the Museum’s operations and ideally a project that the student can use in their professional portfolio. Candidates should be comfortable working with the public for tours and education programs. The intern will be supervised by the Executive Director, Education Coordinator, and the Living History Program Coordinator. Priority is given to students intending to pursue a career in any liberal arts field.
Southfield Neighborhood Network Learning Center (Manitowoc)
The summer intern will have the opportunity to help create educational programs in our onsite educational and technology center that will provide personal and professional growth development for youth and adults living at an income-based housing complex of approximately 400 residents. activities will include summer camps, field trips, holiday celebrations, food share, cooking and pantry programs, community gardening, literacy programs, Manitowoc Public School programming, summer lunch, garden harvest celebration, classes, and other life skill development opportunities. The intern will create monthly newsletters, attend quarterly advisory board meetings and resident community events, develop unique programs, and work with volunteers, donors, resident and community resource partners. The intern is expected to build and maintain trusting relationships with residents while offering supportive services. During your summer internship experience you will work closely with the manager of the Learning Center. You will also have the opportunity to create a portfolio of your dynamic learning experience. Preferred areas of study are education, social work, human development, psychology – open to all majors.
Wisconsin Maritime Museum (Manitowoc)
An internship with the Wisconsin Maritime Museum will provide the intern with a beneficial learning experience while they gain practical experience in the daily operations of a nonprofit museum. In this position, the intern will regularly interact with members of the public including museum visitors, tourist groups, field trip groups, volunteers, and educators. By working at the Museum’s front desk/gift shop (which includes handling cash and interacting with museum guests on a daily basis), in the Museum’s collection, and out in the community, the intern will participate in a variety of museum activities. In addition to assisting with the Museum’s daily visitor engagement activities, the intern will also be expected to develop and complete a project that is selected by the intern and approved by the Education Coordinator & Visitor Engagement Coordinator. This project may interact with any aspect of the Museum’s activities, not just visitor engagement or education, which gives the intern the opportunity to focus on an area of their interest within the museum.
Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin (Milwaukee)
The Partnerships Intern will support Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin’s Partnerships team by assisting with relationship management, data tracking, and partner engagement efforts that strengthen our food distribution network. General duties include supporting partner communications, organizing and analyzing partnership data, assisting with compliance and reporting processes, and contributing to outreach materials and internal documentation. The intern will work on specific projects such as reviewing partner engagement workflows, supporting onboarding or re-engagement efforts, compiling impact metrics, and assisting with special initiatives tied to how we improve the structure of partnerships. This intern would report to the Partnership Manager. Preferred areas of study include human services, social work, volunteer experience at food pantries or other nonprofits, or related fields; desired skills include research and writing, basic data analysis, attention to detail, and a passion for improving food security in eastern Wisconsin.
Radio Milwaukee (Milwaukee)
Radio Milwaukee’s internship program offers hands-on experience in the dynamic world of non-commercial radio. Under this internship, you’ll contribute to Radio Milwaukee as a whole, serving our two primary stations: 88Nine and HYFIN. While you’ll be reporting to the 88Nine Program Director, you’ll see programming doesn’t exist in a vacuum. You’ll perform tasks for programming, production, engineering, operations, events and community engagement — and see how they all work together. We’re seeking individuals excited about the future of public media, with strong communication skills, enthusiasm for community engagement and basic familiarity with audio and video editing for social media are strongly encouraged to join us!
Wisconsin Conservatory of Music (Milwaukee)
The Summer Education Intern is an integral part of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music (WCM) during the summer recruitment season. General duties include the organization and management of WCM’s summer music camps, Community Partnership programs, and outreach events. Responsibilities include camp registration management, camp/event set-up and tear-down, instrument inventory management and distribution, and program creation. This position is student-facing; the intern will have many opportunities to interact with students, their families, and the public. The ideal candidate will have exceptional written and in-person communication skills, basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, a background in instrumental or vocal music (whether as a major or as a hobby) and a desire to connect with members of the WCM community. The Summer Education Intern will report to the Associate Director of Education and work with members of the WCM Education team. Part of this role requires attendance at WCM’s summer camps. Beloit Historical Society (Beloit)
The Museum Collections Management internship projects consist of cataloging historic artifacts by noting description, measurements and condition, photographing the material, entering data into a museum collections database (Past Perfect), and learning how to select the appropriate storage method and location for each item. This project provides experience in procedures to document artifacts and adds new donations into the collections, increasing accessibility to the BHS collections by the community for research and by the staff for use in exhibits and educational programs. Our Executive Director provides training, supervision and guidance as the projects proceed.
The ideal candidate has excellent research and communication skills, works independently and as part of a team, and can work remotely as needed. The preferred areas of study are history, museum studies, education or related field.
Hedberg Public Library (Janesville)
The Hedberg Public Library in seeks a candidate with an interest in books and literacy and a desire to serve children, families, and community members in the Youth Services Department and throughoutJanesville and Rock County. Previous experience working with children and excellent communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to engage with community members of all ages in varied environments. Under the supervision of the Head of Youth Services, the intern will provide customer service to library patrons of all ages at the Children’s desk. They will also develop crafts, games, and other activities for children. The intern will assist in the day-to-day operations of the library’s very popular Summer Library Challenge by helping to promote and assist patrons with all aspects of the program, and they will collaborate on exciting program offerings throughout the summer, including the planning and presentation of at least one story time. Under the supervision of the Community Engagement Specialist, the intern will participate in community events, providing outreach such as checking out books, issuing library cards, reading stories to children, participating in activities, and creating crafts and activities for youth and/or adults. They will spend time on the Bookmobile bringing the library and its offerings to underserved members of Janesville and the surrounding community.
Milton House Museum (Milton)
The Milton House Museum seeks a Summer Collections Intern to assist with the care, organization, and documentation of its three-dimensional artifact collections. Working under the supervision of the Museum Educator Coordinator, the intern will catalog objects, create and update collection records using Past Perfect, and assist with rehousing and storage improvements using basic museum standards. Projects support the museum’s long-term preservation and access goals by improving inventory control and collections organization. The intern is expected to follow established collections care procedures, maintain accurate documentation, work independently and collaboratively, and handle historic objects with professionalism and attention to detail. Preferred candidates are students in museum studies, history, public history, art history, anthropology, or related fields, with strong organizational skills and an interest in collections management.
